Obituary of Shirley Elizabeth McGillivray
McGillivray, Shirley
We have lost a beautiful heart. Shirley was a fiesty, determined soul full of love for her family, friends, and pets. She passed suddenly on the morning of January 4, 2020, after a valiant battle due to a severe stroke suffered in December.
Shirley was born on December 7, 1936, in Owen Sound where she grew into an independent young woman. Her parents, Arthur J. Kennedy and Jennette (Nette) Kennedy encouraged her to pursue a career in Stenography. One of her favorite hobbies was to go to the Beachfront Dance Hall in Port Elgin. It was one of those nights that she met Bob McGillivray, leading to 62 years of marriage, 3 children, David, Patrica Lynn, and Rob, and 2 grandchildren, Nicholas Bomans and Samantha McGillivray. Shirley took such pride in being a Nana and Nick was the light of her life. She will be dearly missed by her daughter-in-laws Sandy Napoli and Mary McGillivray (and partner Paul Near) and her son-in-law Paul Bomans. Her beloved kitties, Sammy and Missy are missing her cuddles.
Friends and family were her world and we take comfort in the thought that she will be reunited with her parents, Art & Nette Kennedy, her beautiful daughter Lynn McGillivray, her granddaughter Sam McGillivray, and dear friends such as Howard Bruce, Joe Avola, Norma Scott and Anna Lisa Cabott. We know they will throw her a welcome party and we expect to hear the thundering laughter from down here.
Family and friends are welcome to join us in a Celebration of Shirley's Life on Friday, January 10, 2020, at St. James Presbyterian Church, 19 Main Street North, Forest, Ontario. There will be a visitation starting at 1:00 pm, and a service by Rev. Joanne MacOdrum at 2:00 pm, followed by a lunch reception in the church basement. Special thanks to Denning’s of Forest for their kind assistance.
In October 2019, Shirley was awarded a 20 year Volunteer Service Award from VON which she was extremely proud of. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations can be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
