Our family sends condolences for Ken to a life well lived with care , love, and an abundance of grace . As his student in high school in the early 70" in gym class he taught me how to go forward with endurance , you can do it! With confidence he encouraged so many of us members of the Chippewas of Kettle Point First Nation, as we attended North Lambton . It is with honour to write about such a treasured man. He was a good friend of my older brother Bill George , hunting , fishing , hockey you name it they loved it. Thankyou Ruth and his loving children & grandchildren for sharing your wonderful , husband , father , grandfather with our community and surrounding areas ! He also encouraged me to continue in college , thanks for your seed of knowledge you planted in so many of us to succeed . ️Blessings and prayers to the Illman family always and forever . Ken....When I got the news you were at the Lodge in Forest and stopped by. I wanted one more shot at the arm-wrestling title. You were asleep so I didn't want to bother you. Actually I was afraid you would have still kicked my butt !! I was hoping to get back to see you, but as many things in life, it wasn't meant to be.
Ruth and family.....it is not fair when someone so giving to others is taken way to soon. Ken was and will be remembered as one of those good guys. The time Ken and you have given to make the dreams of others come true will never be forgotten by this family.
Ken....thanks for those rides to OFFSA and the many games, I am sure I forgot to tell you at the time. Thanks for taking my lunch money at the card games on Park Ave, and most of all thanks for being you....".your the best."

Crunch is one of the great guys, he not only coached, he taught and for me, it was one of the beginnings of my legendary journey which for me, I wound up in the Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame which I was inducted in 2012 and also, the OHA's Crystal Puck Award which I'll be receiving on January 3, 2016.
I feel that Crunch, deserves to be in the Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame with his 32 years of teaching/coaching and, a few more years after that, he belongs in the Hall of Fame.

I have no doubt Ken, Alana greeted you, likely with a volleyball in one hand and a basketball in the other. I'm sure she laughed and reminded you of her nickname, "Speed Bumps" (yes, she told me). Play on.

I, Elke, hope the first person to meet Crunch in the afterlife was Ed Moloy. I can imagine him giving Ken a huge hug and a kiss. Then I imagine them both sitting back and remembering their time amongst us mortals. There are some shenanigans to remember. No, correct that, there are many shenanigans to remember. The shenanigans were NEVER executed with malice, intent to harm, or to cause embarrassment to anyone but themselves. (This was back in the day where political correctness and harassment took a back seat when mayhem and merriment released tension.) I have always relished the role of a support player to the stars and when the stars came out to play… well, it brings a smile to my face to remember their shenanigans.
We offer our sincere condolence to Ken's entire family during this difficult time. Please know in your hearts he is loved by many.

It has been many years since I seen "Crunch", but this was one man, one teacher that always stayed in my memories. I can still picture him at the front of the classroom, a little smirk on his face as he got his point across to the class. He expected the best from his students, because he always believed in his students, and firmly installed in us that we could do anything, as long as we always gave our best, and to never stop trying to do our best. He always had words of wisdom, and interesting facts. "No, hot water does not freeze faster than cold water".....and my favourite, which I quote often to this day "Bacon has no nutritional value at all...it is more nutritious to eat a earthworm"...to which he then proceeded to Eat an earthworm!! I always believed that when you remembered things taught to you by a teacher then that was a pretty darn good teacher!! However, it isn't just the teacher that I remember, it is the man. Ken, you were a man I respected and liked. This world lost a shining star the day you passed. May you find peace & tranquility on the fishing & hunting grounds of heaven.
Our thoughts and prayers are sent out to Tammy, Adam & Ruth and all the family. Hugs!

My condolences to the entire family! Crunch was such a great man and the main reason I chose to become a teacher. He was a teacher, a coach, a mentor and a friend to me. His kind nature and great sense of humour made him very approachable as a teacher. Throughout his time at NLSS he touched countless lives in a positive way that the community will never forget him! He, to me, is a legend that will live on forever!
I would also like to share a story (I will try to make it short). Crunch was my volleyball coach for 2 years. In the second year, I was a third year junior, and one day at practice the team and I were just not focused. We were screwing around constantly and Crunch finally had enough, he yelled at us (which I had never seen him do) and basically kicked us out of the gym and told us to go home. About 7:30 that night, the phone rings. My Mom answers and says it is for me, that it was Crunch. I was extremely surprised, I didn't think teachers called students at home. Crunch had called to appologize for losing his cool at practice (the team should have appologized to him, that's how bad we were) I couldn't believe it! Such a kind man! He and I must have talked for 45 minutes that night!

Ruth, Tammy, Adam and family,
Please accept my condolences. I was very saddened to hear the news of Ken’s passing. He was a larger than life figure at NLSS and will always be remembered as such. I fondly read Adam’s touching tribute to his father in which he said ‘you were strong and healthy and nothing could stop you’, and that’s exactly how I remember Ken.
My fondest memory was hosting an OFSAA soccer tournament in the late 1990s and at the last minute our guest speaker for an evening banquet at the Forest Legion could not make the trip from Toronto. I was in a panic and I thought the evening would be a wash-out, but like the true pro that he was Ken stepped in, took the mic and skillfully ran the entire evening banquet. But that is just one moment among thousands in which he unconditionally gave himself to others at NLSS.
You will truly be missed Crunch. Thank-you for all you did and the example you set.
Derek Arthur and family.

When one looks back at life, there are usually a handful of people who truly influence and inspire you to where you are today. For me, Crunch (Mr. Illman) is one of my rare influencers. Crunch taught me so much more than Phys Ed, more about being a stand up person with world class values, and the hunger to always want more: to be humbling in winning and humble in defeat.
I cannot remember a day in high school without Crunch being involved- I would literaly arrive to school off the yellow bus, and go straight to his and Mr. Maloy's office before first bell. How many volleyball and track practices and hours did he spend? (on Saturday mornings, or him running elementary school volleyball camps, as I first met him in grade 7). A quick estimate in my career with Crunch puts me at 1200hrs of coaching Volleyball and track and field for me over a high school career...all volunteer!!! His style of teaching would make the administrators/suits cringe and would probably cause a lawsuit these days ;), but is also (IMHO) absolutely needed these days - as it is a reality check of the real world.
One of the volleyball photos posted by the family brings tears to my eyes. That was our undefeated season in LSSAA (his only undefeated season I believe). I remember Crunch and those guys like it was yesterday. (but is now 22 years ago).
A testament to Crunch's impact was his "retirement" roast at NLSS. I was blessed to be able to say a few words. Some teachers retire with a few friends/family. Crunch retired to an NLSS gymnasium that was jam-packed.
My sincere condolences to the entire family. Crunch was a good man, a really good coach and mentor (and I'm sure father and grandfather). He will always be remembered by so, so many.

Dad
I feel I need to post something for you as I sit up and read the online condolences to and for you. As you know I am not a Facebook'r and I get my tech savviness from you! So here goes nothing.
Dad, it is only night two without you and it is very hard - I miss you so much. We all do. Our last few days and nights went far too quick. But you are in a better place and I have to believe that. I wish time could stop and that you were still here with us.
We have been sitting up at Tammy and Stan's looking at photos of you. Tammy is reading aloud her Facebook posts. After reading the online condolences on the Dennings Website (former Ron Dodge Funeral Home) I need to say something as your son.
It is very late now. How do I comment on being your son for forty years! Where do I start dad.
I was so fortunate for all the hockey, hunting and fishing and everything else you did for and with me.
I owe you a debt of gratitude for moving to Kenora to be with me and my family.
You got me through some tough times with the craziness I have dealt with in my postings in NW Ontario.
You and I too had our tough times but we got through things and the fishing was good!
I will be forever grateful that my children got to know their grandfather. You were a big help, picking up the kids and taking them to their swimming practises. You watched them every single day, practise and meets until you could drive no longer!
NLSS was part of our family all my life. You were known as Crunch to everyone and Dad to me. Your dedication to that school was second to none. You (and mom) were fine examples of hard work and dedication which I try to strive for in my career.
We wanted your Celebration of Life Service at NLSS dad, but unfortunately it can't be done.
Thirty two years of teaching and coaching plus seven as supply and coaching. Only to call it quits when lung cancer forced you after work to crawl up the driveway.
You were a model for students and teachers alike. I can't imagine how many lives you have touched as a teacher.
I only wish my family could have known you in your earlier years when you were strong and healthy and nothing could stop you.
As I sat with you in your final hours, in sadness, and held your hand, amazingly your hand strength lasted until near the very bitter end. You fought to the very end but as tough as you were, nothing can stop the forces of life.
I could not help but recall as you were slipping away from us, as a kid, the incredible feats of strength and crazy things you did! Holding your hand and feeling that death grip in your condition, I could not believe you were leaving us.
Those hands that used to set up large concrete foundation blocks that you would break with your hands will never be forgotten.
Dad, there are so many things I could talk about. So many, things. Some we can't really talk about too much. LOL. But I will never forget this. I will never forget you. I will try and be like you in many of your qualities.
I still laugh inside after a successful deer hunt as for a period of time or moments I feel as though I have done something wrong and I have to take a second and recall that I am perfectly legal and its not 2 am!
I will continue with the legacy and punish my children with music in the vehicle that I grew to love. Those great hits of Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Marty Robbins and the list goes on.
Lastly, you were always there for me, for everyone actually who needed you.
Thank you dad for everything you have done for me and been too me.
Love you - Your son always,
Adam

My condolences to Ruth,Tammy and Adam and their families.May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Crunch- you were one of the best!!! I cannot look back at my life in Forest without Crunch being a part of it. He was so laid back and fun; which as a teenage student gives you a real sense of ease to be yourself. I am sorry for him that he has lost his life and so sorry for all of those that were closest to him. Please take peace in knowing that he had a huge impact on many lives!!!! Rest in peace.

I was fortunate to have Mr. Illmam aka Crunch in his final years as a gym teacher and coach. He is a legend. One of the best high school volleyball coaches in high school history. He is someone that I will never forget. All students loved him
