Dear Ardis, Bill, Jim, Cathy and Red,
Looking at the "Memorial Video" brought back memories from an extremely happy time in my childhood. The rink behind your house was a big part of my early hockey days. I can't think of Forest and hockey or even my childhood in general, without thinking about Fred Maxfield and your entire family. He was always smiling and doing his best to help everyone he came in contact with! Fred was a huge part of my early childhood and I have nothing but fond memories of him! I send my heartfelt condolences to all of you because I know he will be deeply missed.
Very sincerely, with all my love,
Jim Lochead

Ardis .... (1 of the truly great all encompassing Hockey Moms ... of any generation!)
It was truly an all inspiring rembrence of a super individual held in Forest at the legendary Kimball Hall this past Wednesday the 28th of December 2016.
The town in which I grew up in did not disappoint! So many generations your Family shared Fred with an entire town. For that we have been unwitting benefactors and are eternally appreciative.
As I grew up in the shadows of the Forest arena, "the Booth", the ball fields, even those mighty mean streets of Forest his presence seemed to enhance all of our lives.
As a kid one of the songs that we all knew had a chorus in it that that went something to this effect
"The three men I'd admired most...the Father, Son and Holy Ghost " , well those are spiritual beings and I would like to say that as for earthly beings my list of three would be "Jack, Stan and Fred .... all for various reasons but all anchored in core principles!
I related a generational story quickly to Red on Wednesday but do to the emotions and many stories and friends it would be difficult to recall I am sure.
My personal story with generational reach truly started with the concern Fred Maxfield showed for a 13 year old kid standing looking through the fencing at the start of the hockey season because he had severely broken his leg during the summer and was forbidden to play a game he so wanted to as all his friends were at the rink every Saturday morning.
Finally on the second or third week Fred said get your skates and get out here and drop the puck for these guys I will clear it with your dad. So from that point until Christmas of that year I got to pretend I was a referee before I was able to play on a team again.
With Fred encouraging me to stick with referring and he got OMHA local Wes Oswald to help me obtain my first official card to Officiate.
Fred Maxfield fuelled something in me that I happened to be pretty good at!!! Fred was one that initially recognized something in me that allowed me to reach a very high level of officiating that resulted (way back in the last century) to officiate 3 national championship games spend time in the WHL as a referee attend an NHL camp and later in life become a supervisor of officials.
With out Fred's recognition it is possible that the generational aspect would not have occurred, that being my nephew has officiated national championships in Australia as well as pro there ... he to officiated in Forest.
Ardis and Family thank you for sharing!

Ardis & Family,
So sorry to hear about the passing of Fred, I have a lot good memories of growing up in Forest and coming up through the Minor Hockey association where Fred was a big part of that, not only did he teach me a lot about the game of Hockey, he also taught me great values of life in general. The Fred Maxfield of this world only pass through so often and I'm proud to say I had the opportunity of knowing him, so Ardis, Bill, Cricket, Cathy, Red and Dave hold your heads high when you walk around the town of Forest, because Fred was not only a great person who had time for everyone, but he spent countless hours of volunteering his time managing, coaching or announcing at the arena. On Dec. 19, 2016 the town of Forest lost one of it's great ambassadors. My thought and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time.

Dear Ardis, Bill, Cricket, Cathy, Red, Dave and your entire families. So sorry to hear about Freddy. He was bigger than life. I have so many memories from childhood to present about Fred and they are all good ones. Everyone loved chatting with Fred and usually it was hockey first and fishing second but as you all well know better than I, Freddy loved all sports and liked to talk about them all. For as long as I can remember, kids at the arena flocked to Freddy. He was the Don Cherry of our town and well before Don Cherry became famous. Fred dedicated so much time to Forest Minor Hockey and loved to coach and loved to give advice. He always had a smile and was always happy to see people and especially those that he had not seen in a while. Fred always took the time to talk our children and they were always more than eager to listen and in thinking about it now, they always had a smile on their face because Fred always had one on his. Our community has lost a very special person and our hearts go out to each of you and your families.
