Friends many of you here will remember him as one extraordinary man. Grandpa Gale had a remarkable way of associating with the people around him without saying all that much.
His presence, often mixed with few words, made him a grandfather to all the people of my generation who met him.
It is people like our grandfather... who - when they speak - people understand them, identify with them and listen. He told you what he thought without cluttering it up with excessive words or actions - a quality this grandchild hopes he too can mimic some day.
Grandpa was never afraid of adventure.
Many of you have seen the slide shows of the old red wood panel Austin mini packed to the roof - half of the tiny car was filled with the big army camping tent, one quarter of it was filled with at least one of his children, the other quarter was for Jack Gale, his camera and several canisters of film. They headed north to Algonquin Park in a time where a trip to Toronto for most kids was as exciting as it gets.
Not for the Gales. They'd spend time in Sudbury and all the rest stops in between. One summer they went to this place called Lake Matinenda and helped his friend Cec. Hall build a small cabin in the woods.
Decades later he and grandma would load up their mini-van .. this time with fewer supplies .. to return to that spot. The vehicle... bigger. The supplies more modern -- heck he even had a cell phone - he was a 21st century grandfather AND if he could have loaded up that computer and run an internet connection to check his email and Facebook you know he'd have brought it along too.
The world has changed drastically since those early camping expeditions to Northern Ontario - and grandpa adapted - but he never changed from that caring, adventurous, and down to earth father when he became a grandfather. There was no adjusting needed.
By all accounts from close family friends, Jack Gale was a fun man. We can assure you that our "Grandpa Gale" was that same man.
A few years ago someone commented on his excellent diving form in a photo where he was seen jumping off the rock into the lake at the cottage. My mother told Grandpa that the person said it was pretty good form for a 71 year old man.
Grandpa shot back. "Barbara, go back to them and tell them.... 72-year old man."
I'm pretty sure I speak for all of his grandkids when I say his dry sense of humour is going to be one of the things we'll miss most. That quick wit, pleasant charm and remarkable ability to listen for hours, is not lost on his children or grandchildren.
Our phone calls to Florida used to be "Grandpa and Grandma... I scored my first goal today." As time passed, "Grandpa and Grandma... I won a tournament, .... I got my license.... - In my case - I crashed the tractor through the garage - but your boat is safe we moved it out of the garage last week... Grandpa .... I'm a high school graduate.... I'm moving .... I've met someone... We're getting married.... Grandpa ... you're going to be a great-grandfather... Grandpa, you're going to be a great grand father... again and again"
I've thought a lot these past few days about where grandpa was most at home, where was he most comfortable.
Was it in the sunroom in that tranquil park in Englewood, Florida, was it in his boat cruising Florida's inland waterways, in the living room in that old house on John Street in Forest, gazing out on the world from the living room of their cozy apartment on James Street, on a screened in porch at the cottage or on the old beaches of Ipperwash?
Where was he most at home, most comfortable, it's hard to determine. What did all these places have common. What would have attracted him to these places?
Then I realized In all of those locations.... always an arms length away, seated in the chair right next to him was his best friend, his life partner, his extraordinary wife.
That was his rock, his attraction to all of those places and to all of life.
When Grandpa was 81 years old he snagged a giant Northern Pike up at the cottage. I wasn't there, I can't tell you how big it was but Grandpa would want me to tell you all today it was the world's biggest. So I will.
But it was actually Grandpa's second most impressive catch. His best catch was 59 years earlier. Grandma. But even Grandma will tell you that that day he caught that pike -- he was beaming.
He was more than a grandpa to us. He was our leader. When he spoke, we listened. When he laughed, we laughed just as hard. We rarely saw him cry but be we did see him love someone, our grandma, every single day. His love for her lives on through all of us.
No matter how you know or are related to this extraordinary man, in the coming days I suggest we all go back and search for our first... our earliest memory of him. Keep doing that. Every time you do so... you'll never succeed. You'll never be convinced that is the first memory. But you will succeed in keeping his spirit strong. You'll always come up with a new memory you thought you'd forgotten.
Over the past few days I've been trying to think back to that first memory as a child.... each time I try that I remember a garage sale on the lawn of what is now the local grocery store, playing on the living room floor there, a visit he made to our farm, or an afternoon visit to his office in Wanstead.
In the book The Measure of a man by Sidney Portier he says it often takes a time like this to realize how simple life is; how few the essentials really are. We love, we work, we raise our families. Those are the areas of significance in our individual lives. And love and work and family are the legacy we leave behind when our little moment in the sun is gone.
Grandpa what a legacy you leave us...
Only a few grandchildren will carry the name on. But we, as grandchildren, will ALL, not only carry but embrace our grandfather's legacy.
As a grandfather he brought to us great mothers or a great father, courageous aunts and an uncle, remarkable cousins. He leave us with our grandmother, his partner and best friend. She was his rock. We will always be hers. We owe it to her and you, grandpa.
It's all up to us, all of us together, now.
Grandpa Gale, GG..... we'll all do you proud.

Ron and I want to express our sympathy to all the Gale family. While we didn’t get to know ‘Grandpa Gale’ well ourselves, we think so very much of Barb, Gary and their family. Grandpa and Grandma Gale must be very special people to have raised such a beautiful daughter, and have given so much to the lives of their children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. They have a most wonderful grandson in Scott – we are so very blessed to have him as part of our family and we know how special Grandpa and Grandma Gale have been in his life. We are so sorry that Grandpa Gale has passed on. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. We hope the many wonderful memories you all share will give you comfort in the coming days and years.

Dearest Dorothy and family, I was so sad to hear of Jack's passing. We shared lots of good times over the years and I always remember how he loved those card games. He loved to tease my Mom and she loved him. I also remember how you and Jack welcomed our little family to Forest. You are in my sincere thoughts and prayers at this sad time. Much love to you all. Sharon.
